SiteScripter Access Restrictions
SiteScripter intranets are restricted to authorized people. Authorized people can login to a SiteScripter intranet by entering their email address and password on the SiteScripter Secure Login form. Once logged in, the person will be authorized to have access to various portions of the intranet based on their member type and the groups to which they belong.
Member Types
There are four member types in SiteScripter. These are: Admin, Editor, Member, and Associate. We'll describe each of these, from most powerful to least powerful.
Admins are authorized to have complete access to the entire intranet including viewing and editing of all web pages and access to all tools. Typically, there will be very few people authorized as admins on a library's SiteScripter intranet. However, at least one person must be authorized as an admin at all times. Some tools can only be accessed by people who are admins.
Editors are authorized to create and edit web pages. In all other respects, Editors are just like Members as described below. Editors can be authorized to edit any web pages on a library's intranet or only web pages they create. This restriction can be set on an intranet-wide basis or on an individual basis. Many people at a library can be Editors.
Members are authorized to access the SiteScripter intranet of their library. By default, they can view web pages on that intranet. A web page can be restricted to specific groups of members by an Editor, if desired. If a Member does not belong to at least one the specified groups, that Member will not be able to view that web page. Some tools, such as Password and Forums, are automatically authorized to members. Admins can grant groups of members access to most other tools. If a Member does not belong to at least one of the specified groups, that Member will not be able to access that tool. Most people at a library will be Members with additional authorization granted via their group memberships.
Associates are authorized to access the SiteScripter intranet of libraries other then their own. Let's say that again: Associates can login to other SiteScripter intranets using the email address and password they use to login to their own intranet. By default, Associates cannot view any web pages. However, Editors can grant Associates access to specific web pages. This can be a very useful way of sharing content between libraries without exposing the content to the entire Internet. Associates only have access to the Logout and Forums tools. The Forums Admin tool can be used to allow Associates read, post, or topic creation access to specific forums. Access to other tools cannot be authorized.
Groups
As discussed above, access to web pages can be restricted to specific groups and access to tools can be granted to specific groups. Throughout SiteScripter, group membership is used to manage the intranet.
Typically, groups exist to organize the members of the library, for example, department or committee groups, will be used to restrict web page access or grant tool access. For example, the Systems department group might be granted access to the web page describing the shutdown process for the library catalog server. Or the Budget Office group might be granted access to the Payment tool. Occasionally, special purpose groups will be created just to grant access to web pages or tools. For example, a small number of people might be granted access to the Notices tool so that only approved notices are emailed to members.
